Brides & Grooms recently engaged…the planning has begun. What is the first thing you do?  The dress, venue, catering?   No, the first order of business is to come up a realistic budget. I often tell my brides that this is a project in itself and certainly, a learning experience. With a show of hands, how many have planned a wedding before?  Ummm….i see!  Well, standards in the industry are constantly changing so what is the best method of determining an accurate budget? First things first, what is the number one most important thing to you that you will not waiver on? Answer that and then make a list of all of the elements to your design and vendors you want to see present i.e. florist, cake, photography, catering. Research that list and come up with 3 options per and then investigate their products. I say 3 because any more will overwhelm. For the photography, for example , we will need to get an estimate on everything you want from engagement photos to extra per hour charges from each candidate. Use the internet to read their reviews. Everybody has happy client testimonials but don’t neglect Yelp.  Be confident when asking for the bottom line and estimated additional costs. I offer my clients the opportunity to review their other proposals, and often they are not itemized and spelled out fully when they are reviewing them.  Find someone with a passion for what they do. Is that a personal plug?  Yes! I have references and I’m not afraid to use them . I’m of the Miracle On 34TH Street mind-set and if the Abbey’s not the best choice, I will tell you and offer you suggestions on what might be the best fit for your aesthetic or budget. This is an important day to you, and to me. Let’s make it the best it can be!

The Abbey would love to help you have the perfect picnic wedding, if you need help or tips and preparing your budget, our Team is more than happy to help you.

The Abbey Team

I just wanted to give a quick run-down of what you can come to expect upon confirming with The Abbey Catering & Event Design Co. -First and foremost you should have had a wonderful experience with your Salesperson and he/she should have made themselves available to you at your convenience with quick and efficient responses to any questions or revisions you might have had via email or phone. -After confirming with 25% deposit and signing of the initial proposal, on or before your wonderful customized Tasting, we continue moving on to the next steps.  Please note that you’re initial proposal “never” ends up being the same as when your wedding/event takes place.  We make sure that two week’s before the event; your correct guest count, rentals, etc. are all accounted for so that you only pay for what you’re expecting, not what you originally agreed upon +/- 12 months before the event itself.  Our Director of Special Events will be contacting you within one week of your confirmation for a complimentary Design Consultation and to discuss any additional needs as necessary. -From there the Abbey Team, will introduce you to your Coordinator and/or Event Captain as your primary contact.  Your Coordinator or Event Captain will be available with unlimited telephone and email correspondence throughout the process and most importantly, be the person there on-site on your event day. Basically, that’s our standard procedure with no compromises made, but it can’t be said enough that you are more than welcome, even encouraged, to contact your Salesperson, Coordinator, or Event Captain with any questions you might have throughout.  We’re certainly all here to ensure that you feel taken care of your expectations are ALWAYS being met.

A Del Mar Wedding at the Powerhouse

Posted by: Chris Campbell

August 9th, 2010 >> Preferred Venues, Weddings

The first sunny day  in a month in Del Mar was the perfect gift for Tonya & Rich on their wedding day.The Del Mar Powerhouse was completely transformed by our Abbey team to delight guests. The tone was set with a casual, lounge-style ceremony. Tonya was beautiful in her dress & Rich dashing in his tuxedo. Everybody enjoyed the outdoor garden with some of the Abbey’s finest appetizers, complimented by our couples signature Pink Lemon Drop Cocktail, yummy! Ushered in and seated, our guests were then treated to a dramatic grand entrance down the stairwell straight into a sweetly perfect first dance. Dinner service was smooth and Rich and Ted , the best man, took a quick break to walk down to the beach with our bride riding high on a surfboard. Then the night was in full swing, toasts , dancing, and children running and laughing. Tonya and Rich, your friends and family were wonderful- my very best to you and the girls as you embark on your next journey.

Happy Honeymooning!

A Healthy Bride is an Organized Bride

San Diego Bride Abbey Catering

A healthy bride is an organized bride.

As the months turn into weeks and the weeks turn into days, the time remaining before a bride gets married shrinks at an exponential rate as the big day arrives.  There is always something on the “To Do” list that has to take priority.  Usually as things get pushed down the list, exercise gets pushed down the furthest at times.  Which in a way can makes things worse.  The Abbey Blog has been focusing for weeks now on things a bride to be can do to keep up a healthy fitness program on the road to her nuptials.  In those posts we have been focusing on different exercises, diets and regimes that will help you prepare.  But one thing that can get overlooked in regards fitness is Time Management.  Time Management can be crucial to the success or failure of any fitness program.  If enough time is not set aside for the program, it will fail.  But just setting aside time to exercise doesn’t equal success.  Proper time, the right time or quality time is critical.  A completely stressed out, hurried routine will not have the same benefit that a relaxed, enjoyed workout can provide.  In addition to that, the cool down time is not as effective because filled with worries of what needs to get done next.  And don’t even get me started with what stressed out sleep is like.

So having a good Time Management system in place can do wonders for your fitness program in helping you get the best out of what you do when you exercise.  Almost without exception, brides today are organized.  From Day Planners, to Google Calendars, to Smartphones…today’s women are organized.  But even with all those productivity apps on your phone, the amount to get done exceeds the time available.  That is where The Abbey comes in to help.  Not only will our consultants years of experience help, but those years of experience come with years of contacts and connections.  The San Diego wedding industry is massive and navigating it can be quite tricky.  We have a wide selection of vendors that we are proud to work with.  We are on a number of Venue’s Preferred Caterer Lists and are partners with The La Jolla Woman’s Club in beautiful historic La Jolla, California.  Another time saver and stress reducer…All Inclusive Wedding Packages.  The Abbey Catering & Event Design is the only San Diego company to offer a true All Inclusive Wedding Package.  With an Abbey Package, everything is covered.  The venue, food, beverages, photographer, videographer, flowers, music, coordination, officiant, limo….even the honeymoon at our luxury condo in Maui if desired.  We can make all the stress of meeting with dozens of people disappear.  And having a single source of contact can create a wealth of time for the more important things leading up to your wedding, like a fitness program.

Please feel free to contact any one of our wedding and event consultants here for more information.

The Birdcage Veil and Tea Dress Gown

Posted by: Liz, Blogger

July 23rd, 2010 >> Trends, Weddings

When brides want a classic look without the stress of a full veil, a perfect choice is the birdcage veil. Lightweight and easy to attach, the attachments place little stress on the hair while still giving full coverage as a veil, and add a contemporary look to a classic fashion style.

Different types of netting add full flexibility of choice to the bride, with the French net adding a softer, lace look and the Russian net appearing bolder, with more defined fabrics used. The high-fashion styles feature embellished details on the netting, and look great with added feather flower fastener.

Birdcage veils have made big news in Hollywood, with celebrities such as Madonna, Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon all admitting to be fans of the style. The trend is said to be a spin-off from the tea-length wedding gown, although we love the veil in its own right because it is unique, fun and it certainly turns heads at any ceremony. The accents on the fasteners remind us of the statement jewelry trend happening at the moment, and with gown fashions becoming more princess-like and romantic, this is a beautiful way to modernize a classic look with style.

We here at The Abbey are seeing quite a bit of  both worlds in the brides we have been working with lately.  There is  a great love of the classic aspects of a ceremony and reception.  But with most of the younger brides, adding little personal touches that are a little different from the norm seems to be exact what the bride ordered.

To get more modern trends in wedding decor, ceremony styles and reception themes, visit us over at The Abbey to find out more.

It is always magical to witness two people deep in love. This Sunday, April 24th was no exception. This wedding held for 250 guests took in the pristine and beautiful Coronado Community Center. This full package wedding provided by The Abbey was exceptional, especially the flowers, beautiful pink roses, pink tulips with white lilies complemented silver and aqua satin linens with white pin tuck napkins. Within twenty nine minutes a full sit down dinner was accommodated for all guests. Unique party favors consisted of chocolate covered fortune cookies, and brought a lovely touch to this celebration. The up lighting throughout the hall gave this couple a wedding of distinction and original feel of elegance and class.
