Keys to a Fun Wedding Reception

Posted by: Chris Campbell

October 10th, 2011 >> Events, Tips, Trends, Weddings

1)      Plan some unexpected entertainment:  Guests are accustomed to seeing the usual things, like the money dance and other wedding favorites; but why not surprise your guests with unique entertainment?  One bride and groom wowed their guests with a fully choreographed tango dance, while another had a live band karaoke at their reception.  One unique option is renting The Abbey’s one of a kind photo booth, full with silly props it can be a big hit at your reception. It is always a great hit among guests and can really jazz up your party.

2)      Add a lounge to your reception:  Sometimes guests get restless sitting at the dining tables and don’t really feel the need to shake their booty, so why not create a nice lounge space for guests to escape to?  Renting a few couches or small pieces of furniture with some pillows in an area lit by candlelight really would add a level of class to your reception while maintaining a fun atmosphere.  The Abbey Catering can help, we have great lounge pieces for any occasion.

3)      Music, music, music:  Whether you hire a band or one of The Abbey’s preferred DJs for entertainment, make sure you see eye to eye on the type of music they play.  Songs like “The Macarena” and “The Chicken Dance” should really be outlawed.  And bands normally take a break or two during the reception, so make sure they have something to play as backup during those times.

4)      Kids are people too:  It’s inevitable that children will be attending the wedding, so have a game plan to keep them entertained while the adults can have some quality time together.  Hire a babysitter to watch over the kids while they enjoy a movie in a separate room or have other games and activities to keep them occupied.

5)      Keep the toasts to under 2 minutes each:  Simple and heartfelt toasts are the way to go and help maintain the flow of a good party.  Too many toasts and those that are awkward or long-winded from the cousin-you-never-talk-to can really dampen the mood.

6)      Have fun and fresh food:  The Abbey has amazing menus to appease any palate, so take advantage of what we have to offer and customize it by your tastes!  For a more casual style, order stations of Mexican tacos or a slider bar for guests to enjoy.  If a buffet-style or plated dinner isn’t your cup of tea; have heavy hors d’oeuvres or a simple yet elegant display.

7)      Hire a day-of wedding coordinator:  After all of the time and planning, nothing is worse than being stressed out on your wedding day.  So look into using one of The Abbey’s veteran day-of wedding coordinators to take care of all the little details and to ensure your day is as special and as worry-free as can be!

Radiating with splendent colors and the sounds of song birds filling the air, the 26th of March will be held in the minds and hearts of this couple forever.  Dressed in glimmering metallic gray, and sun bright yellow, this wedding was designed fit to perfection from the beginning. Two-hundred and forty-five guests attended the beautiful couple’s special day with vows that last forever.

This couple brought an amazing twist to a special day not only for theme but to friends and guests as well!! Working with the deaf community, her wedding was catered with interpreters for the deaf. The wedding ceremony, toast, and dance were catered with interpreters for all guests to love, cherish, and enjoy. It was truly remarkable and left a spot for softness in all guests’ hearts.

Each table had center pieces of three foot vases designed by Artquest Florists. The vases were filled with floating lemons and a beautiful arrangement of yellow, white, and red roses bursting from the top, while full bloom pussy willows wept enchantment over the table. Held at the La Jolla Women’s Club, the reception provided a perfect pinch of elegance and spring class!

For an enchanted bride-to-be there are only a few places on earth for the most perfect wedding. There was nothing bashful or quiet about this wedding. From beginning to end its brilliant colors and the exquisite church left all with a jaw dropping memory!

The vibrant royal blue was the main color of the wedding and thus, everything else seemed to fall into place. It was held at the Immaculata Church at USD which couldn’t have been a more suited place with its desirable blue ceilings and wall draperies. Eighty guests were invited to this special ceremony to have their hearts filled with love and joy for the couple’s special union.  The reception was held at the La Jolla Women’s Club. It was also decorated with royal blue linens center pieces with a broad range of bright colorful flowers, and accompanied with silver chivari chairs that brought class to the room like no other.

The McCluney Wedding

Posted by: Quinn

April 1st, 2011 >> Abbey staff, Events, From the Kitchen, Weddings

March 2nd is just another normal day to you but to the Tucay and McCluney family it will always represent a union of two very special people in their lives. The two newlyweds chose to get married at Levyland in Carlsbad, with their families gathered under the San Diego sun for an intimate yet casual wedding ceremony. After the ceremony we moved into cocktail hour where the guests were treated to our delicious appetizers including: Coconut-crusted Golden Shrimp, Pita bread with a sweet Indian curry hummus, and Ahi Poke on cucumber slices to name a few. With good music, good people, good food, and good drinks this made for a great wedding reception.

Elegant Table Setting

Fit for their wedding day

After cocktail hour we moved right into dinner service, starting with the bride and groom we served our signature Abbey salad consisting of Mixed Greens with Dried Cranberries, Caramelized Walnuts and Crumbled Imported Feta with our homemade raspberry vinaigrette. After salad service was complete we opened the buffet and excused the tables individually to get their entrees. The Entrees included in dinner service were Salmon En Croûte (Fresh Wild Salmon wrapped in puff and stuffed with sautéed spinach, Wild Mushrooms and Goat Cheese) and Chargrilled Chicken topped with a Cream Buerre Blanc/Thyme Sauce.  After dinner the newlywed and their family and friends danced the night away!

You are such  true professionals. You made every idea I had about the wedding come true and exceeded every expectation I had.  Every time we spoke, you made me feel like I was the only bride you had as a client even though I know you were always in high demand! You genuinely cared about our wedding and went to every length to ensure our satisfaction.  I cannot express my thanks to you enough; you honestly gave us perfection. The entire Abbey experience was amazing.  Every single person that had a hand in our wedding made it as special as if it were their own.  I felt so calm and confident knowing that every detail was taken care of by the Abbey staff.  I can honestly say that I was never “stressed” about any part of the wedding planning or the actual day because of the trust I had in the Abbey and the vendors I had chosen.  It is clear that everyone takes pride in their work and is shows in every wedding they do.  So thank you to Robert, Rob,  Arturo, Randy, Blake, Tande, Babycakes and all the service professionals for making our day perfect.

Everything was beautiful in spite of the rain – my bouquet, the bridesmaids bouquets, the centerpieces, the alter pieces were spectacular. I was so amazed and stunned! The entire room was aglow and stayed that way the entire night!
The food was delicious, the dancing was awesome –  I only wish the night could have lasted longer. Please know that I am so grateful  - it was an amazing night - unforgettable for me and my family!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Preparing a Budget for Your Wedding-Notes from the Office

Brides & Grooms recently engaged…the planning has begun. What is the first thing you do?  The dress, venue, catering?   No, the first order of business is to come up a realistic budget. I often tell my brides that this is a project in itself and certainly, a learning experience. With a show of hands, how many have planned a wedding before?  Ummm….i see!  Well, standards in the industry are constantly changing so what is the best method of determining an accurate budget? First things first, what is the number one most important thing to you that you will not waiver on? Answer that and then make a list of all of the elements to your design and vendors you want to see present i.e. florist, cake, photography, catering. Research that list and come up with 3 options per and then investigate their products. I say 3 because any more will overwhelm. For the photography, for example , we will need to get an estimate on everything you want from engagement photos to extra per hour charges from each candidate. Use the internet to read their reviews. Everybody has happy client testimonials but don’t neglect Yelp.  Be confident when asking for the bottom line and estimated additional costs. I offer my clients the opportunity to review their other proposals, and often they are not itemized and spelled out fully when they are reviewing them.  Find someone with a passion for what they do. Is that a personal plug?  Yes! I have references and I’m not afraid to use them . I’m of the Miracle On 34TH Street mind-set and if the Abbey’s not the best choice, I will tell you and offer you suggestions on what might be the best fit for your aesthetic or budget. This is an important day to you, and to me. Let’s make it the best it can be!

Something personal that speaks to” who you are” but offers you a day that can get your guests to relax and completely enjoy themselves. A Picnic Wedding may be the best direction. An alternative to the traditional or flow reception, the Picnic Wedding offers you an option that can truly make your day, a very memorable one.

Picture it, a grassy field, a setting anyone could enjoy that brings you back to the good old days. Custom blankets in your bridesmaids colors lay out before you adorned by Floral Displays on small custom tables at every site. Servers tending to you as though it were a formal sit-down dinner, but the kids can come, run around , and so can the adults. Seated on your blanket, you will enjoy the luxury of the Seated Dinner Service, but have the laid back mentality of your childhood. Set up a lemonade bar to complete the vision, offer seating for Mom & Dad, Grandparents too but the mass of your guests will be completely emerged in a throw-back that will excite and delight children of all ages.
